It’s quite ironic... when I began as a doula, I had a fantasized idea of what birth would be like for most women - uneventful, uninterrupted, totally organic. After all, that’s the way I experienced my first baby. Birth was euphoric, empowering and most certainly nothing to fear! Sadly, though, that’s not the ideal result for most women birthing in our communities. I’ve seen my share of interventions, inductions & various other “un-necessities”, and I silently grieve for each of those families, all the while, maintaining professionalism, decorum & a non-judgmental view of their experiences. I have come to the tough realization that it’s beyond my scope as a doula to protect women from themselves - from the technocratic model of care & childbirth. It’s not my duty to decide how they birth, where they birth or if they’re receiving the best care with the Doctor or Midwife they choose. It’s my honor to hug, nurture, massage, give all the ‘you-can-do-it’s, provide as much evidence-based information possible, answer all the “what-if’s”, advocate for what’s important to them and support the toughest of decisions. Being a doula in that regard is most challenging because our ‘hands are tied’, and we are so limited in the things we can do for our families. I choose to loosen those bounds. I choose to bring birth back to it’s most raw, natural & organic form - after all isn’t that what Whole Foods, Sprouts, Sunflower Market & Trader Joe’s all about? Families deserve so much more from us as Birth Professionals! That’s why I am so thrilled about this amazing journey toward certification in Midwifery. I truly care for birthing women & their families! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Women remember 3 things in life, the day they graduated, the day they married, and most of all, the day their babies entered the world. As a Certified Massage Doula, I have a personal mission to ensure that that very day is one of connection, empowerment, love & respect for the body. It brings husbands closer to their wives, parents closer to their children - thus continuing the beautiful cycle of birth...
